The energy of a lightsaber passes through a living kyber crystal to create a unique blade of focused plasma energy. This energy is sheathed in a field that contains it. Upon contact with matter, the field passes through, letting the destructive energies of the blade cut through something. Upon contact with certain types of energy, however, the field deflects. This allows a lightsaber blade to deflect an incoming blade, or to swat away blaster bolts. A physical weapon sheathed in energy, like the electro-staffs used by the MagnaGuards for instance, will also deflect a lightsaber blade.
