@陈树义

for translating this answer!)

Lower = ✔Better

Most Americans aren't jealous of any other nation.

Just to confirm, I asked my American American roommates. They all said that they're not jealous of any other country. But one hilariously said that he was jealous of people who lived in California (加州) because the weather is nicer. So, my American roommates are pretty focused within the country.

As many people correctly expect, life in America feels amazing. But in many ways, we are indoctrinated, from the time we enter kindergarten, to believe that America is the greatest nation on Earth. (And I can talk more about that in a different topic if people are interested.)

Actually, life in America is not the pinnacle of quality and happiness. According to UN data, America is not the healthiest nor the happiest nation.

America's ranking in popular statistical measures are,

  • Quality of Life Index: USA 13th (Ireland 1st; China 60th) [2]
  • Satisfaction with Life Index: USA 23rd (Denmark 1st; China 82nd) [3]
  • Human Development Index: USA 4th (Norway 1st; China 89th) [4]

I calculated some rankings by combining the data available on

Quality of Life Index by Country 2012

and concluded that America ranks about 15th out of the top 18 countries.[5]

Overall Ranking of America?

So why aren't Americans jealous of other nations?

I think it's a combination of an ignorance of international affairs and a lack of international travel.

According to a study by Stephen Bennett, Americans had the least knowledge of international affairs in comparison to their counterparts in Germany, Britain, Canada and France.[6] And another study showed that 81% of people surveyed in Mexico, Spain, Italy, Canada, Germany, Britain and France could answer at least one question about international affairs (usually, "Who is the president of X country?"), but only 63% of Americans could.[7]

Below, is a world map distorted by the number of times a country was reported about in American media in February 2010. The majority of the stories are about America and the second most stories are about Iraq, where American troops are stationed.

If this map is any indication of the exposure that most American receive about international events, then I would argue that it's close to zero in mainstream media. That's not to say that it's not freely available, but an American has to try hard to look for it.

This TED talk by

Alisa Miller: "The news about the news"

explains the phenomenon in more detail.

EDIT:

A good example of this phenomenon is the cover of Time in the U.S. compared to the rest of the world. Although the same articles are published inside, the covers suggest that even Americans' perception of news is extremely egocentric.

American misconceptions about other nations are so ridiculous that designer Yanko Tsvetkov made this sarcastic depiction of what American think about the rest of the world.[8] As ridiculous and disturbing as some of these labels seem, I went to high school and college with some people who literally believed these stereotypes.

Since Americans don't hear about the rest of the world through the news, it also doesn't help that we don't see it with our own eyes. Although almost 35% of Americans have a passport, most of those passport holders are immigrants. Only about 5% of Americans use it for travel.[9]

How can Americans be jealous of something that we don't even know exists?
