在中苏交恶的过程中,几次错误的翻译起了推波助澜的作用。
1961年饥荒之时,尽管双方的关系早已不睦,但苏方为缓和关系,派驻华大使送去了一封赫鲁晓夫的信,提出:苏联愿意借给中国一百万吨粮食和五十万吨蔗糖,帮助中国度过困难时期。
但中方翻译组在翻译这封信的时候,译错了一个地方:将“借给”一词理解为“贷款方式”,译成“以贷款方式给中国提供一百万吨粮食和五十万吨蔗糖”,也就是将来要以货币来偿还。致使中央领导无法准确理解苏方的原意,根据错误信息进行决策,当时的领导人对五十年代后期为偿还苏联贷款无比艰辛的处境还心有余悸,便回复赫鲁晓夫表示只愿意接受这批蔗糖,婉拒了粮食。直到外贸部副部长周化民前往莫斯科办理具体事宜时才发现了这一错误,被总理秘书马列电话告知后翻译组无比内疚,但此时中国已经从西方市场取得了粮食,最终也没有接受苏联的援助粮。中苏之间的关系改善效果也大打折扣。
后来中苏关系进一步恶化,1964年中苏边界谈判时,中方发言评论中用过“作茧自缚”、“得陇望蜀”的成语,苏方听了翻译后认为,前者是说他们是“虫子”,是一种侮辱和蔑视,而后者是“血口喷人”,以为中方竟然认为苏方对甘肃和四川有领土要求。
再比如,1970年,中苏边界问题谈判中,双方曾经有一次激烈的辩论。苏方代表团团长指责中方对其发言做了“过分反应”,苏方翻译给翻成了“病态反应”。中方听了后火冒三丈,怒斥对方理屈词穷,说了很多难听的话,不惜进行人身攻击。苏方不知道是翻译的责任,也进行回击,双方唇枪舌剑、你来我往,打乱了谈判的正常进程。
在一次中苏谈判中,苏方对中方的尖锐批驳表示不满,表示希望中方“理智”能占上风。结果,苏方翻译把“理智”翻译成了“健康思想”。这又惹了大祸。因为当时勃列日涅夫是把林元帅视为“健康力量”的,现在竟敢在谈判桌上大放厥词,双方又吵嚷起来,情绪激动,差点掀了桌子。
中苏对峙期间,谈判桌上,苏联谈判代表再三向中方澄清,"对中国四川、甘肃没有领土要求,绝不会占领这两处"。
中国谈判代表很纳闷很奇怪,这什么鬼,本着实则虚之的战略眼光,这是苏联对四川这种腹背都想占了,这是要亡我共和国的节奏啊。苦思不得其解。
最后灵光一现豁然开朗,这是中方代表怒斥苏联"得寸进尺、得陇望蜀",翻译给直译了。
中方代表说苏联"作茧自缚",也被直译了,苏联人觉得在侮辱他们是虫子。。。
中苏之间的谈判(包括边界谈判和各种磋商),都有一个程序方面的协议,规定全体会议由双方团长轮流做主席,可以向对方提供讲稿,翻译由各自的翻译担任,不做共同记录,但可以核对记录等等。正式会谈苏方均有速记员做记录。开始时候中方也曾派速记员出席会议,但是苏方译员的汉语不规范,中文速记员无法成文,只好作罢。这就加重了中方译员的责任,因为苏方记录的是俄译文,而不是中文。我们一开始即做两种文本的记录:中文和俄文。说到苏方译员,他们经常闹笑话:在1964年边界谈判时,我方发言中曾经用过"作茧自缚"、"得陇望蜀"之类的成语,我们向苏方提供了中、俄文稿。想不到苏方的译员一知半解,自作聪明,认为他们发现了"新大陆",硬说中方译文不准确,于是下一次会议上苏方的发言中提到中方对苏方进行了"污蔑",把他们比做什么虫子,说他们竟对陕西和四川提出领土要求。中方人员听后莫名其妙,但我知道这是苏方译员直译那些成语造成的误会。 ——李凤林
当年我方首长在接见一位亚洲国家元首,宾主谈得投机,首长高兴地邀请对方来春再次访华,相约"烟花三月下扬州"。可等翻译说完后对方却表情古怪,连连表示"美意心领,但自己年事已高,年事已高!"。首长大惑,下来一问方知,翻译的理解是"在来年三月的春天里,带着美丽的姑娘去扬州",殊不知,此烟花非彼烟花也!
又如,曾有一位首长年底团拜旅居中国的外国专家,问到一位韩国专家可否有回家的计划。对方摇头晃脑,极有韵律地说了一大段。
翻译立刻就见了汗,支吾了半天说"他想在木槿花开花的时候,买一条木船,放在鸭绿江里用水洗",众人一时语塞。最后还是另一位精通汉语和东亚历史的日本专家解了围,原来韩翁此处引用了一首韩人所做汉诗"待到槿花花发日,鸭江春水理归船"。

破了1千,诚惶诚恐诚惶诚恐。
评论区很多人都在说中国文化博大精深,外国人无法领略其中的奥妙。有些人却心存疑问,为什么中国作家在国际大奖很少获奖,为什么我们没有出现像莎士比亚,大仲马一样的文豪呢!其实,中国有不少优秀的文学作品,也在不断的在国际取得好的口碑。莫言的《蛙》获得了诺奖,刘慈欣的《三体》获得了雨果奖,我们要注意的是,三体是在刘宇昆的翻译后获得了第73届雨果文学奖最佳长篇文学小说奖。同样的,在刘宇昆的帮助下,郝景芳的《北京折叠》也斩获了雨果奖。
我们缺少的不是优秀作品,而是能把汉语魅力给带到西方去的人,是两种语言彼此沟通的桥梁。

这就是那首大多数的人背诵的第一首诗吧!翻译成英文后,我们会发现有许多种不同的译本,缺少一种感觉,是什么呢?
押韵。读起来没有那种朗朗上口的感觉,为了让外国人能够读懂,我们把诗句翻译成英文,他们理解了却无法接通古诗的韵律,我们的诗的韵律美也许只能我们孤芳自赏了!
真希望有一天,会有个贯通中西的人,能够让外国人也享受享受我们诗句的韵律美。
我只聊三个极其重大的翻译错误。

汉语里的“文明”是从 civilization 翻译过来的。我认为,这是翻译错误的一个例子。Civilization 其实是一个对于亚非拉等相对落后的国家、地区和民族等的一个歧视性用语,其意思就是,相对于欧洲文明(西方文明),亚非拉是野蛮,西方人是去“开化”、“教化”,也即 civilize。而所谓的 civilize 文明的过程,恰恰是一个极其野蛮的过程,充满了掠夺、血腥和欺诈等等。亨廷顿就指出,十八世纪的法国思想家最早提出了“文明”的概念,就是针对所谓的“野蛮”(《THE CLASH OF CIVILIZATIONS》)。
当然,现在文明这个词的含义有了扩展和变化,有某个族群的生存样态的意思。自从有了人类,就有了“文明”,文明有发达和落后之分,但是,没有所谓的有无之分,也没有所谓的文明和野蛮之分。例如,假定说文明没有诞生在非洲,则是错误的,说非洲文明发展的极其缓慢,是落后的,则更加贴切。同样,假如说某些民族没文字就是没文明,也是错误的。文字只是文明发展的一个里程碑而已。
我对文明的理解是,人类诞生的同时,就产生了文明。文明是人类的一个共同特征。人类没有文明和野蛮之分。

我一直认为,将“GOD”翻译为“上帝”是不妥的。但是,我又苦于找不出更好的翻译。是否可以翻译为“高德神”之类的?就是音译,或者,避免广告的嫌疑,就译为高神。或者模仿将GODDESS翻译成“女神”,GOD就翻译成男神,(这个有点是在开玩笑)。
至于为什么将“GOD”之类的翻译为“上帝”是不妥的,甚至翻译成“高帝”也不妥,理由很简单,因为我国古代早就有“上帝”这种表达方式,所以,将“GOD”翻译为“上帝”,不仅有歧义,而且,此“上帝”非彼“上帝”。基督教里的“上帝”是某个具体形象(耶和华),但是,我国古人说的上帝,就是抬头看到的茫茫苍天。就是说,在我国古代秦始皇之前,帝是天的同义词。例如,《诗经•鄘风•君子偕老》里有,“胡然而天也,胡然而帝也”。
按理,“天佑中华”与“上帝保佑”,是同义词,可惜,由于翻译的错误,“上帝”这个表述被篡夺了。
一般认为,我国早在甲骨文中就有“上帝”的表达,但其实,甲骨文中没有“上帝”这个词,只有“上”、“天”和“帝”这些字,后人把其解释为上帝。最早完整的“上帝”,可能是出现在清华简中《耆夜》里周公旦的诗句,“明明上帝”。武王八年,伐黎归来后行“饮至”之礼,就是打了胜仗归来后聚众喝酒庆贺,同时赋诗助兴,周公旦祝颂:“明明上帝,临下有光”。还有,被认为是正宗尚书残篇的清华简《厚父》中有,“廼严寅畏皇天上帝之命”,“惟曰其助上帝乱下民”。上帝就是上天,不是某种具体的个体形象。
《尚书•尧典》中有“肆类于上帝,禋于六宗,望于山川,遍于群神”的文字表述。这里的“上帝”,有的人解释为是“上一个帝王”的意思,就是舜的前辈尧。但是,我认为,是上天的意思。在我国古代,将“天”表达为“上帝”的,比比皆是。当然,我国古人脑子里的“上帝”与基督教中的“GOD”有所不同,完全是两码事。
再例如,《尚书•皋陶谟》里有这样的文字:“徯志以昭受上帝,天其申命用休”。据说这是大禹说的话,意思是:要心存大志,领悟上苍的旨意,这样上苍就会不断赐福给你。这里的“上帝”就是“天”的意思了。再例如,《尚书•商书•汤誓》中有“予畏上帝,不敢不正”的表达。这里的“上帝”是“上天”的意思,即成汤讨伐夏桀是上天的旨意。
此外,诗经里“上帝”这个表述,不知道出现了多少次。《诗经•小雅•正月》里,有“有皇上帝,伊谁云憎”的诗句。《诗经•大雅•大明》里,有“昭事上帝,聿怀多福”,“上帝临女,无贰尔心!”《诗经•鲁颂•闷宫》:“上帝是依,无灾无害”。“无贰无虞,上帝临女”。《诗经•周颂•执竞》:“丕显成康,上帝是皇”。还有,《诗经•周颂•臣工》:“明昭上帝,迄用康年”。《诗经•大雅•文王》:“上帝既命,侯于周服”。“殷之未丧师,克配上帝”。《诗经•大雅•皇矣》:“上帝耆之,憎其式廓”。《诗经•大雅•生民》:“以赫厥灵,上帝不宁”。“上帝居歆,胡臭亶时”。《诗经•大雅•板》:“上帝板板,下民卒瘅”。《诗经•大雅•荡》:“荡荡上帝,下民之辟”。“疾威上帝,其民多辟”。“匪上帝不时,殷不用旧”。《诗经•大雅•云汉》:“后稷不克,上帝不临”。“昊天上帝,则不我遗”。“昊天上帝,宁俾我遁”。“昊天上帝,则不我虞”。等等。
据说,偶然有把周王称为上帝的,例如,《诗经•小雅•菀者柳》里的“上帝甚蹈,无自暱焉”。“上帝甚蹈,无自瘵焉”。但是,这个需要进一步考证。我个人认为,上帝还是上天的意思,不会是指周王。
《左传》里,也有“上帝”这个表达方式。公元前549年,齐国大夫崔杼弑君(齐庄公)后,立齐景公,晏子(就是晏婴)百般纠结,最后也没什么办法,只能仰天长叹,说:“婴所不唯忠于君、利社稷者是与,有如上帝”。转而为齐景公做事(《襄公二十五年》)。再例如,公元前536年,卫襄公去世,“(周景)王使臣简公如卫吊”,悼词里说:“叔父陟恪,在我先王之左右,以佐事上帝。余敢高圉、亚圉?”(《昭公七年》)此外,子服景伯说过,“鲁将以十月上辛有事于上帝、先王,季辛而毕” (《哀公十三年》)。这些上帝,都是上天的意思。
古人常把“上帝”简称为“帝”。例如,《诗经•周颂•思文》里的“贻我来牟,帝命率育”。《诗经•商颂•长发》里的“有娀方将,帝立子生商”,“帝命不违,至于汤齐”。《诗经•大雅•皇矣》里,多处把上帝简作为帝,例如,唯此王季(《昭公二十八年》里,成鱄引用时说成“文王”),帝度其心,等等。这首诗,把当时的“帝”与“王”的关系和区别表达清楚了。还有,《左传》里所说的“帝”,都是上帝,也即上天。例如,《成公十年》记载,晋侯(景公)梦大厉,被发及地,搏膺而踊,曰:“杀余孙,不义。余得请于帝矣!”这里的“帝”,就是上帝。再例如,《成公十三年》里,晋厉公派遣吕相去与秦国谈绝交的事,进行了长篇的论述,其中转述楚国责备秦国时,有“昭告昊天上帝”的表达。此外,《僖公十年》里,申生说的“余得请于帝矣”、“帝许我罚有罪矣”中的“帝”都是上帝的意思。
汉民族是信仰上帝的,但是,这个上帝是天,不是耶和华或者耶稣之类的某个具体形象。此外,在秦始皇之前,所谓“帝”,说的都是天。所谓皇帝,说的也是上天。《诗经•大雅•皇矣》里有“皇矣上帝,临下有赫”。《诗经•周颂•执竞》里有“不显成康,上帝是皇”。地上最高的只能称王,或者叫天王、天子(天之子),周王以外的诸侯国的君主都称“公”、“侯”、“伯”或者“子”之类的。楚国是例外,因为不满被周王室所轻视,所以自称为“王”。嬴政狂妄,自称皇帝,因为是破了古制先例,所以叫“始皇帝”。但是,他这个始皇帝只做了十一年,整个秦朝也只有十四年。
由此也可推论,先秦文献中,凡是有把人称为帝的,都涉嫌是秦朝以后,特别是汉代以后的伪造。《尚书•尧典》里,之所以有类似“帝尧,曰放勋”这样的表述,恰恰说明了是伪作。《尚书》其实是汉代的作品,那个时候就是把“王”称作“帝”了。顾颉刚也发现了这个问题,他说,《山海经》等篇以“帝”为活人的阶位之称,是一个最明显的漏洞(《古史辨自序》)。《昭公二十九年》里,蔡墨在向魏献子介绍有关龙的事情时说,“乃扰畜龙,以服事帝舜。帝赐之姓曰董,氏曰豢龙。封诸鬷川,鬷夷氏其后也。故帝舜氏世有畜龙”。同样道理,根据“帝舜”这个表述,可以得出结论,这整个关于龙的传说都是汉代的人(可能是刘歆)假借魏献子和蔡墨对话的形式而添加进《左传》的。

关于误译,还有一个例子。要说翻译失败之最,非“共产”莫属。我很早就纳闷,类似communi-这个成分,怎么会翻译成“共产”的。无论怎么翻译,也不应该翻译为共产。当然,现在理解为是“共同”或者“共存”,所以有了“命运共同体”的表达方式。
communi-这个成分,应该翻译成“共同”,或者“共存”,才是比较正确的翻译。进一步将communi-、democra-和republic进行比较和考虑后,我认为,将communi-翻译为“共和”,才是最精准的翻译,就是和谐共存的意思。“产”这个字,无论是指财产还是生产活动,都与communi-这个词无关。democra-是人民统治的意思,翻译为民主(民做主)虽然与古文里的“民主”(民之主)有歧义,但基本还说得过去。而将republic翻译为共和,应该是个错误。republic的原意是“公共事务”,怎么也与“共和”联系不起来。这个翻译,是否借用了西周的共伯和,就不得而知了。其实republic的意思与public的意思相接近,翻译成“公共”之类的,才比较贴切。
我很晚才知道“共产”是日本人的翻译。早期的革命党人不少是在日本活动,许多西方的东西,是英文翻译成日文,然后日文翻译成中文。例如,最早的《共产党宣言》,就是陈望道从日文版的翻译过来的。(第一句,一个幽灵,共产主义的幽灵,在欧洲游荡。其中的“幽灵”和“游荡”,都翻译的不妥,疑似带有贬义,英语原文中的spectre 和 haunting,应该如何翻译,非常需要再研究)。当时,日方译者幸德秋水和堺利彦,就没有把communi-翻译对。不过,在日语里,共产就是“共同劳动”、“共同生产”的意思,比较接近原意。此共产非彼共产。可惜,日本的汉字和我们的相同,大家望文生义,结果,在我国,共产曾一度变成一个很怪的词汇了(例如,曾被曲解为“共产共妻”)。
两种不同的语言,彼此互相翻译的事情,比想象的要复杂很多。不同语种之间,除了部分简单的事物,都不是简单的一一对应关系。错误的翻译,有时会导致严重后果。假定一开始,就把communi-这个成分翻译成“共同”或者“共享”等,可能历史都会被改写。
要真上升到【误国】这个高度的话,这翻译里面的门道可是了不得啊。
五十年代的时候,国内流传的马恩著作大多都是莫斯科外文局出版的,价格便宜,但卖不掉,因为中国人读不下去。后来中央编译局才大量印发了中国人自己"俄译中"的版本。但中国人自己译的就出了问题了(此处省略一篇博士论文)……总之这个问题呢,或者是我们【故意】要这样译的,或者我们是误译了的。
后来到了文革时期,有人批评北大中文系主任杨晦修正马克思主义文艺理论。杨晦先生是老党员了,批判会上,杨先生拿出了德文版的马克思著作、俄文版的马克思著作、英文版的马克思著作、中文版的马克思著作……然后说,批判我修正马克思主义文艺理论的地方,告诉各位,你们都是根据中文版来说的,我是根据德文版说的。你们只要对照一下就知道,我说的是马克思的原话,你们说的是中国翻译者的话。而中文版的很多问题是根据俄文版来的,俄文版对德文版不诚实,中文版就跟着它不诚实。
以前我并不懂啊,只是对杨先生的勇气很是佩服。后来稍微领悟一点所谓“中国特色XXXX”以后,我才知道俄文版翻译只有这样翻译才能行,俄文版翻译如果真的把德文版完全如实翻过来的话,俄国就可能就不是这样了。俄国不是这样,那中国跟着俄国也不是这样了。
所谓【翻译误国】,大概莫过于是吧。(手动doge脸)
1.“我很高兴捏到了波兰的私处”
Jimmy Carter knew how to get an audience to pay attention. In a speech given during the US President's 1977 visit to Poland, he appeared to express sexual desire for the then-Communist country. Or that's what his translator said, anyway. It turned out Carter had said he wanted to learn about the Polish people's "desires for the future".
“Carter was happy to be in Poland” was translated into "he was happy to grasp at Poland's private parts".
美国前总统吉米·卡特知道如何吸引观众的注意。在他1977年访问波兰发表演说时,他似乎对当时还是共产主义国家的波兰表现出性欲——或者他是被翻译给坑了。后来才发现,卡特原来说的是希望了解波兰人民“对未来的渴望”。

3.“我们要埋葬你们”
Yet when set in context, Khruschev's words were closer to meaning "Whether you like it or not, history is on our side. We will dig you in". He was stating that Communism would outlast capitalism, which would destroy itself from within, referring to a passage in Karl Marx's Communist Manifesto that argued "What the bourgeoisie therefore produces, above all, are its own grave-diggers." While not the most calming phrase he could have uttered, it was not the sabre-rattling threat that inflamed anti-Communists and raised the spectre of a nuclear attack in the minds of Americans.
然而根据上下文来看,赫鲁晓夫原话的意思应该是“不管你们喜不喜欢,历史都在我们这一边。我们会为你们掘土。”他实际上指的是马克思在《共产党宣言》里写的一段话“资产阶级生产的首先是自身的掘墓人”,意思是资本主义将从内部自我毁灭,共产主义最终将战胜资本主义。虽然这句话也不那么让人安心,但毕竟还算不上什么刀光剑影的恫吓,也不至于激怒反共势力,让如临大敌的美国人以为受到了核威胁。

来个书面翻译而非口译的例子吧。大部分语言里公文使用的书面语与口语差别很大,尤以文言文与白话的差别为甚。1793年出使清朝的马戛尔尼使团就在这个问题上出了大麻烦。
马戛尔尼使团并不是没有找翻译。英国人在广州十三行与清朝官员打交道一般依赖通事。这些人教育程度不高,英文仅限于洋泾浜水平。因此马戛尔尼遣副使斯当东到欧洲大陆寻访中文翻译,终于在那不勒斯传道会高薪聘请了周保罗和李雅各这两名翻译(周保罗到了澳门就跑路了,李雅各一直留到最后)。这两人不通英文,只会说拉丁语,但马戛尔尼会说拉丁语,且国书等重要文件都有英文本和拉丁文本。不会英文对于文书翻译并不影响。麻烦的是这两位十几岁就到欧洲学习传教,并没有受过科场的历练,对于公文写作一窍不通。这一点连副使斯当东都察觉到了。马戛尔尼使团到北京以后获得了耶稣会教士的协助,但由于英葡英法矛盾(在北京的耶稣会教士以葡萄牙人和法国人为主),重要文件交给他们翻译的并不多。
马戛尔尼递交给乾隆的国书就是一部翻译极其拙劣的文书。译者是何许人已不可考,但可以确定的是这位译者可能是北方人,几乎完全不通公文写作。为适应朝贡秩序而调整文字自然可以理解,但言辞实在俚俗不堪,只能为乾隆和清廷大员所耻笑。

本国早有心要差人来,皆因本境四周地方俱不平安,耽搁多时。如今把四面的仇敌都平服了,本境平安,造了许多大船,差了许多明白的人,漂洋到各处。并不是想要添自己的国土,自己的国土也够了,也不是为贪图买卖便宜,但为着要见识普天下各地方有多少处,各处事情物件可以彼此通融,别国的好处我们能得着,我们的好处别国也能得着。恐各处地方,我们有知道不全的,也有全不知道的。从前的想头要知道,如今蒙天主的恩可办成了,要把各处的禽兽、草木、土物各件都要知道,要把四方十界的物件,各国相互交易,大家都得便宜。是以长想着要将各国的风俗礼法明白了。
We have been still more anxious to enquire into the arts and manners of Countries where civilization has been perfected by the wise ordinances and virtuous examples of their Sovereigns thro a long series of ages; and above all, Our ardent wish had been to become acquainted with those celebrated institution of Your Majesty’s populous and extensive Empire which have carried its prosperity to such a height as to be the admiration of all surrounding Nation –
如今闻得各处惟有中国大皇帝管的地方,一切风俗礼法比别处更高,至精至妙,实在是头一处,各处也都赞美心服的。故此越发想念着来向化输诚。
And now that We have by prudence and Justice avoided the calamities of War into which discord and ambition have plunged most of the other Kingdoms of Europe, and that by engaging Our Allies in Hindostan to put an end to hostilities occasioned by the attack of an ambious Neighbour, even when it was in Our power to destroy him, We have the happiness of being at peace with all the World, no time can be so propitious for extending the bounds of friendship and benebolence, and for proposing to communicate and receive those benefits which must result from an unreserved and amicable intercourse, between such great and civilzed Nation as China and Great Britain.
此时不单大西洋都平安,就是小西洋红毛邻国的人,他没有理,同本国打仗,也都平复了。如今本国与各处全平安了,所以趁此时候,得与中国大皇帝进献表贡,盼望得些好处。
Many of Our subjects have also frequented for a long time past a remote part of Your Majesty’s dominion for the purpose of Trade. No doubt, the interchange of commodities between Nation distantly situated tends to their mutual convenience, industry and wealth, as the blessings which the Great God of Heaven has conferred upon various soils and climates are thus distributed among his Creatures scattered over the surface of the Earth.
从前本国的许多人到中国海口来做买卖,两下的人都能得好处。
But such an intercourse requires to be properly conducted, so as that the new Comers may not infringe the laws and Customs of the Country they visit, and that on the other hand they may be received on terms of hospitality and meet the Justice and protection due to Strangers. We are indeed equally desirous to restrain Our Subjects from doing evil or even of shewing ill example in any foreign Country, as We are that [they] should receive no injury in it.
但两下往来,各处都有规矩,自然各守法度。惟愿我的人到各处去,安分守规矩,不叫他们生事。但人心不一样,如没有一个人严严管束他们,就恐不能保其不生事。
There is no method of effecting so good a purpose, but by the residence of a proper Person authorized by Us to regulate their conduct and to receive complaints against them whenever they should give occasion for any to be made against them, as well as any they might conider as having just cause to make of ill treatment towards them.
By such means every misunderstanding may be prevented, every inconveniences removed, a firm and lasting friendship cemented and a return of mutual good offices secured between our respective Empires.
故此求与中国永远平安和好,必得派一我国的人,带我的权柄,住在中国地方,以便弹压我们来的人。有不是,罚他们,有委曲,亦可护他们。这样办法,可保诸事平安。
All these conideration have determined Us to depute an Embassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Your Court, and willing to make choice for this purpose of a Person truly worthy of representing Us and of appearing before Your August Presence We have fixed upon Our right trusty and well-beloved Cousin and Counsellor the Right Honorable George Lord Viscount Macartney, Baron of Lissanoure and one of Our most honorable Privy Council of Our Kingdom of Great Britain, Knight of the most honorable order of the Bath and of the most ancient and royal order of the White Eagle, and Fellow of Our Royal Society of London for the promotion of natural knowledge, a Nobleman of high rank and quality, of great virtue, wisdom and ability, who has filled many important offices in the State of trust and honor, has already worthily represented Our Person in an Embassy to the Court of Russia, and has governed with mildness, justice and success, several of Our most coniderable possession in the Eastern and western Parts of the World, and appointed to the Government General of Bengal, to be Our Embassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Your Imperial Majesty with credentials under Our Great Seal of Our Kingdoms and Our Sign Manual, to whom We entreat Your Majesty to grant a gracious reception, as well as a favorable attention to his Representation.
我如今为这些缘故,特差一个人到中国来照管这些事情。要得一妥当明白的人,又有才学,又有权柄,又要到得大皇帝跟前对答上来的。故此我所派的热沃尔日吗哩格德呢公哩萨诺吧咙,是本国王的亲戚,忠信良善,议国事的大臣,身上带的两个恩典的凭据,从许多博学人里挑出来一个大博学的人。他从前办过多少大事,又到俄罗斯国出过差,又管过多少地方办事,又到过小西洋本噶拉等处属国地方料理过事情。这就是此次派的正贡使,到大皇帝驾前办事。因他能办差使,表文上有本国的印信为凭。所以叫他将表文呈进。在大皇帝驾前说话,如自己说话一般。如今求大皇帝见他,即同见我,与他说话,即同与我说话一样,施恩典看待他。
And in order to avoid every possibility of interruption in this amicable communication which we wish to establish and maintain with Your sublime Person and Court, and which might happen after the departure of Our said Embassador Extraordinary whose presence may be necessary to Our Affairs elsewhere or in case of his death or ocassional absence from Your Capital, We have appointed Our trusty and well beloved Sir George Staunton, Bart., honorary Doctor of Laws of Our University of Oxford, and Fellow of Our Royal Society of London for the promotion of natural knowledge, whom We have appointed Our Secretary of Embassy under the direction of Our Embassador as a Gentleman of wisdom and knowledge who hath already served us with fidelity and zeal as a Member of Our honorable Council and Colonel of Militia in some of Our Dominion in the West Indies, and appointed by Us Our Attorney General in the same, and hath since exercised with ability and success the Office of Commissioner for treating and making Peace with Tippoo Sultaun, one of the most coniderable Princes of Hindostan, to be also Minister Plenipotentiary to Your August Person, with Credentials likewise under Our Great Seal, and for whom, in case of the death departure or occasional absence of Our said Embassador Extraordinary, We entreat in like manner Your Majesty’s gracious reception and attention to his Representation in Our name.

We rely on Your Imperial Majesty’s wisdom and Justice and general benevolence to Mankind so conpicuous in Your long and happy reign that You will please to allow Our Ambassador and Representative at Your Court to have the opportunity of contemplating the example of Your virtues and to obtain such information of Your celebrated institution as will enable him to enlighten Our People on his return; He, on Our part being directed to give, as far as Your Majesty shall please to desire it, a full and free communication of any art, science, or observation, either of use or curiosity, which the industry ingenuity and experience of Europeans may have enabled them to acquire:
如今我国知道大皇帝圣功威德、公正仁爱的好处,故恳请将所差的人在北京城切近观光,沐浴教化,以便回国时奉扬德政,化道本国众人。至所差的人,如大皇帝用他的学问巧思,要他办些事,做些精巧技艺,只管委他。或在内地办不出来,还好寄信来,在大西洋各地方采办得出来的。
And also that You will be pleased to ① allow to any of Our Subjects frequenting the Coasts of Your dominion, and conducting themselves with propriety a secure residence there, and a fair access to Your Markets, under such laws and regulation, as Your Majesty shall think right, and that their lives and properties shall be safe under Your Imperial protection: ② that one Man shall not suffer for the crime of another, in which he did not participate, and whose evasion for Justice he did not assist, but that every measure shall be taken on the part of your Government as Our Embassador is instructed strictly to direct to be taken on the part of Our People to seize and bring to condign Punishment, any of Our Subjects transgressing the laws or good order of Your Empire, or disturbing the Peace and friendship subsisting between Us.
我本国的人,或是在中国管的地方住着,或是来做买卖,若是他果能安分小心,求大皇帝加恩,他们都好仗着鸿福承受厚恩。他们若得了不是,即该处治。若并无不是,自然常受大皇帝的恩典。
We have particularly instructed Our Embassador to take every method in his Power to mark Our regard and friendly disposition to Your Imperial Majesty, and it will give Us the utmost satisfaction to learn that Our wishes in that respect have been amply complied with and that as We are Brethren in Soverignty, so may a Brotherly affection ever subsist between Us.

朝鲜人民军和联合国部队曾在共同警备区发生打斗,朝方在现场发现一把奥地利制造的斧头。
在场的有人懂英文,认出斧头上刻有“MADE IN AUSTRIA(奥地利制造)”字样,但这个英文翻译却将此译成了“澳大利亚制造(MADE IN AUSTRALIA)”。由此以讹传讹,引起人们对澳大利亚的极大愤怒。于是朝鲜政府作出了撤回大使,断绝外交关系的决定。
